Number of Females to a Sire

The number of females of the different classes of stock which a sire is capable of serving in a season is somewhat variable, and depends to a large extent upon the age of the sire and the conditions under which both he and the females are kept.

When the bulls or rams are kept indoors, and have the cows or ewes brought to them, they will successfully serve a considerably larger number of animals than if they were allowed to run with the herd or flock. The following may be taken as reasonable averages:

Stallion

70 to 80

Mares

Ram

25 to 40

Ewes

Bull

40 to 55

Cows

Boar

20 to 30

Sows
